Great Britain and Poland collect their medals for the TA2x
The pre-Paralympic adaptive rowing regatta in Poznan, Poland, saw athletes try and stamp their dominance on their chosen race. The next time they will meet will be in Beijing at the Paralympic Games in September 2008. Judging by today’s results, Great Britain is looking to be a solid medal contender. They won two of the four events.

Arms Women’s Single Sculls (AW1x)

After favourite Helene Raynsford of Great Britain had to pull out for medical reasons, two boats were left. Svitlana Kupriianova of Ukraine totally dominated Liudmila Vauchok of Belarus. Buy the finish Kupriianova had a full half minute lead over Belarus at the end of the 1000m race. These athletes have both qualified for the Beijing Paralympic Games and will meet again there in September.

Svitlana KUPRIIANOVA: “It was a very pleasant race, because I won it! I hope to win one of the prizes in Beijing.”

Arms Men’s Single Sculls (AM1x)

At the 2007 World Rowing Championships in Munich Tom Aggar of Great Britain became a World Champion. This was Aggar’s first year at the international level and it earned him a Paralympic spot and made him the crew to beat. Aggar got out into the lead and settled into a 32 stroke rate pace. Israel’s Eli Nawi, who finished third last year, was in second. Nawi used a very high stroke rate to try and catch Aggar. Coming into the finish Aggar remained at 32 with Nawi at 49.

Aggar crossed the line comfortably in first, Nawi takes second and Ukraine’s Oleksander Petrenko earns third. All of these athletes have qualified for Beijing.

UKR – Bronze medallist
Oleksandr PETRENKO: “Breathing was difficult, was a big physical effort. My time is much better this time compared to the heat.”

Trunk and Arms Double Sculls (TA2x)

Much to the audience’s delight Poland’s Yolanta Pawlak and Piotr Majka were in the lead. Using a long swinging motion and impeccable timing, Pawlak and Majka were looking stylish. But the Poles were being challenged. Right on their tail was James Roberts and Karen Cromie of Great Britain. The new duo of Roberts and Cromie didn’t quite have such good timing but they were moving their boat.

Poland, in an attempt to shake off Great Britain, took their rating to 38, Great Britain hung in there at 35. At the line Poland had the edge. Great Britain take second and Ukraine earn third.

POL – Gold medallist
Piotr MAJKA: “The race was good, but not very good. We only achieved 60% of what we could have because we caught a crab.”

Legs, Trunk and Arms Mixed Coxed Four (LTAMx4+)

Great Britain has big hopes for a medal in this event at the Paralympic Games in September. Today they stamped their mark by getting out to an open water lead by the half-way point. Their timing and rhythm made them look like the class boat in this race. Germany did their best to come after Great Britain, taking their stroke rate to 32. In the process the Germans moved away from the Netherlands. But Great Britain, at a 33 stroke rate, remained in the lead.
