KIWI INTERNATIONAL ROWING SKIFFS

KIRS UK - WORLD CLASS COMPETITIVE DESIGNS - PURE CARBON - LIGHTER - STIFFER - DURABILITY - LONGEVITY

INTRODUCING KIWI INTERNATIONAL ROWING SKIFFS TO THE UK

KIRS are highly competitive racing boats that have numerous successes on the international scene. This includes winning the last three Senior World Championships in the M1x and the last two LM1x titles; as well as taking numerous U23 World Championship titles.

Sculls are available at only £5,200 plus VAT (currently at 15%), which is great value for money when compared to the European boat manufactures for a world class boat! This price includes shipping and all other import taxes and duty.

KIRS build only one class of boat, which means the boats that you will get will be the same as those used at international level by such athletes like Mahe Drysdale, Rob Waddell and Duncan Grant.

Boats can be in customised to your requirements. Think of a colour and we can paint hulls to you suit; this includes the option of fading colours into one another. Additionally you can have anodised riggers. Personalise your boat!!!

A demo boat will soon be available in the UK shortly (KIRS 7.9, 60-72.5kg). A demo 8+ (KIRS 18.7; 90-105kg), which was previously used by Cambridge University, will also become available to trial. In the future other moulds may also become available.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Short, sharp, shock FISA Team Cup

Share on Facebook | Email this article
26/02/2009

A competitive combination of countries, favourable warm weather and some surprise results - these elements all added up to a successful 15th FISA Team Cup in Spain’s southern city of Seville.

The Czech Republic sent a small but powerful team which included Vaclav Chalupa who is heading into his third decade of international rowing. Racing over the 1000m distance on the first day of the two-day regatta, the Czechs picked up gold medals in the men’s double, lightweight men’s double, men’s four and lightweight men’s four.

The men’s single went Greece’s way with last year’s European Rowing Championships winner Ioannis Christou taking gold ahead of Mindaugas Griskonis of Lithuania with Chalupa finishing third.

Ursula Grobler of South Africa crossed the finish line first in the lightweight women’s single while Hong Kong and Spain finished second and third respectively. Grobler, who is currently living and training in Spain, then teamed up with top Spanish lightweight, Teresa Mas de Xaxars to win the lightweight women’s double.

A surprise win in the lightweight men’s single went Hong Kong’s way with their most accomplished rower Hiu Fung Law getting first ahead of top Czech lightweight, Ondrej Vetesnik. Hong Kong also took third after a fine effort by two-time Olympian Sau Wah So. Hong Kong has been training in Seville leading up to the Team Cup and they will remain for another week.

Spain’s Olympic single sculler Nuria Dominguez won the women’s single, beating sole Russian entry Yulia Kalinovskaya and Italy’s Elisabetta Sancassani.

The second day of racing covered a 500m distance and produced very different results. In the absence of the Czech Republic, due to flight times, and some new entries, host nation Spain took gold in the lightweight men’s single (Marco Toral) as well as the men’s four, men’s pair and men’s eight. But in the women’s single, Russia’s Kalinovskaya denied Dominguez of another Spanish gold.

The lightweight women’s single went to the line with Greece’s Stergiani Pavlov just piping Ka Man Lee of Hong Kong with Glober back less than a second in third.

In the absence of Greece, Griskonis earned line honours in the men’s single. Italy’s rowing stalwart Simone Raineri got second while Stergios Papachristos of Greece followed in third.

FISA’s Development Director Thor Nilsen said many of the teams used this regatta as a chance for some variation from winter training so no one was completely racing prepared. But Nilsen said he was impressed by the results, especially of Hong Kong’s team.

Nilsen commented that the number of participants were down on previous years. He cited several reasons including the recent cold weather in the north meaning that many northern Europeans had been unable to row, some athletes are still taking post-Olympic breaks and the present economy is having an impact on available funding.

Rowing Congress moves on Olympic qualification

Share on Facebook | Email this article
24/02/2009

The proposal to limit the number of boats per nation in the Olympic rowing events to 10 of the 14 Olympic classes was raised at the FISA Extraordinary Congress in Cape Town, South Africa. At this stage no action will be taken.

The proposal, which was tabled by the Swiss Rowing Federation, to the 130 member nations of FISA, the International Rowing Federation, at the Extraordinary Congress, was aimed at giving smaller “developed” nations a better chance of qualifying for the Olympics.

At the Congress, FISA’s Council informed the delegates that the mechanics of the Swiss proposal would have been very complicated, if not impossible, to apply to the qualification process but acknowledged the issue raised by the Swiss Rowing Federation. The Council suggested that the issue would be seriously addressed when discussions started on the 2012 Olympic qualification system. The Swiss Federation withdrew their proposal on the understanding that the Council would fully analyse the situation over the coming months. The matter would then be placed on the agenda of the annual FISA Congress to be held following the 2009 World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland, on 31 August.

When Switzerland first announced the proposal it was met with criticism from strong rowing nations like Great Britain, Canada and Australia who aim to qualify as many boats as possible for the Olympic Games. At the Beijing Olympics, Australia qualified in all 14 boat classes while Germany and the United States qualified 13, Great Britain 12 and China 11 boats.

Lightweight weighing in times at regattas was hotly debated with the British Rowing Federation’s proposal being accepted. In cases where one lightweight event is raced more than once on the same day, the competitors will now have to weigh in just once, before the first race. All crews in this event must weigh in at the same time regardless of whether they are racing in the earlier round or not. For example if repechages and semifinals are raced on the same day, all crews that have qualified directly for the semifinals would only weigh in before the repechages in the morning, and not two hours before their afternoon race. This scenario does sometimes arise at the Rowing World Cup regattas. The Council proposed that rowers would have to weigh in two hours before their race, according to the rules, regardless of whether it was their second race of the day or not.

The automatic removal rule for events with seven or less entries over a three-year period will not apply for boat classes at the Junior and Under 23 Championships that have an Olympic Games equivalent. The current criteria states that if the number of entries is below seven for three consecutive years then it will be dropped as an event. It was also decided that the lightweight men’s eight would no longer be ‘protected’ from the below seven rule. This eight will now be subject to the same rules governing automatic removal from the programme.

The lightweight women’s quadruple sculls event has been added to the World Rowing Under 23 Championships. This proposal was put forward by the Australian Rowing Federation which stated that, as the lightweight women’s quad is a World Championship event, it was important to provide racing opportunities at the under-23 level in order to prepare lightweight women for higher competition.

Mahe Drysdale leads over Rob Waddell in the men's single sculls at the New Zealand National Rowing Championships at Lake Ruatanihwa on February 21, 2009 in Twizel, New Zealand. The middle of the South Island of New Zealand is a long way from anywhere, but this past weekend it was alive and buzzing with the anticipation of top single scullers Mahe Drysdale and Rob Waddell racing each other for the first time this year.

The men’s single final at the New Zealand Rowing Championships went Drysdale’s way in a race that opened with Waddell’s Olympic doubles partner, Nathan Cohen leading at the start. Then Waddell took over at the front through the middle of the Lake Ruataniwha course before Drysdale found the lead.

“I relaxed and suddenly my boat took off passing him (Waddell) shortly after the 1000m and opening up a five second gap between there and the finish. I won in a time of 6:47 which is very fast for Twizel [Lake Ruataniwha regatta course],” said Drysdale who raced in near perfect conditions.

Drysdale regained the men’s single title which was won last year by Waddell. Both Drysdale and Waddell have publicly stated that the single is the boat they want to compete in at this year’s World Rowing Championships. With just one position per country allowed in each championship event, New Zealand selectors will have to choose. Selection trials begin next week with the New Zealand team being announced on 6 March. There is potential for selectors to send both single scullers to the Rowing World Cup events and use these races as the decider for who will race at the World Rowing Championships.

Mahe Drysdale leads over Rob Waddell in the men's single sculls at the New Zealand National Rowing Championships at Lake Ruatanihwa on February 21, 2009 in Twizel, New Zealand.Men’s single results
1 Mahe Drysdale 6:47.32
2 Rob Waddell 6:52.65
3 Peter Taylor 7:00.58
4 Joseph Sullivan 7:10.74
5 Nathan Cohen 7:31.06
6 Storm Uru 7:34.36

While Drysdale and Waddell chose to focus on the single, Cohen raced in other events at the regatta. Cohen, with partner Matthew Trott, won the men’s double. This race was touted as a showdown between Cohen and Trott and Beijing Olympic lightweight double scullers, Peter Taylor and Storm Uru. But a boat stopping crab by Uru in the choppy water put Taylor and Uru out of contention. Taylor and Uru went on to easily win the lightweight men’s double. Joseph Sullivan also raced in other events.

A fast time was registered by Hamish Bond and Jade Uru in the men’s double. Bond raced in the men’s four at the Beijing Olympics and his Olympic teammate Eric Murray took second behind Bond. Murray raced with under 23-rower Simon Watson.

Olympic single sculler Emma Twigg easily won the women’s single and will go to trials with little competition for her spot. Twigg also won the women’s double, pairing up with Tamsin Gilbert. Candice Hammond won the lightweight women’s single over Louise Ayling. The two then paired up to win the lightweight double.

I DON'T LIKE ERGOS
(With apologies to The Boomtown Rats)

The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload,
And nobody's gonna pull 2K today,
She's going to make them stay at home,
Her coach doesn't understand it,
He always said that she rates too low
And he can see no reason
Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to row

Tell me why I Don't like Ergos
Tell me why I Don't like Ergos
Tell me why I Don't like Ergos
I want to shoot
The whole squad down

The concept machine is kept so clean
Showing splits to a waiting world,
The coach feels so shocked,
boat selection rocked,
And his thoughts turn to
The Henley crew
Rate 16 on the erg machine
No, it ain't so neat to admit defeat,
They can see no reasons
Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to row

Tell me why I Don't like Ergos
Tell me why I Don't like Ergos
Tell me why I Don't like Ergos
I want to shoot
The whole squad down

All the erging's stopped in the boathouse now
She wants to play in her scull a while
And crew's out early and soon we'll be learning
And the lesson today is not to sky
And then the coxbox crackles,
And the coxn cackles,
With the problems and the how's and why's
And he can see no reasons
Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die

Tell me why I Don't like Ergos
Tell me why I Don't like Ergos
Tell me why I Don't like Ergos
I want to shoot

SENIOR GIRL

Ah Ah, senior girl
She's been living in her pointed world
I bet she never had a novice guy
I bet her coach has never told her why
I'm gonna try for a senior girl

She's been living in her high status world
As long as anyone with hot blood can
And now she's looking for a novice man
That's what I am

And when she rows past shes always in time
But when she squares up shell make up her mind
She'll see I'm not so rough
Just because I'm in love with an senior girl
You know I've seen her in her pointed world
She's getting tired of high status toys
And all her presents from Leander boys
She's got a choice

Ohh...

Senior girl
You know that I can't row like Johnny Searle
But maybe someday when my race comes in
She'll understand what kind of guy I've been
And then I'll win

And when she's sculling she's looking so fine
And when she's stretching, she'll say that she's mine
She'll say I'm not so rough
Just because I'm in love with a senior girl
She's been living in her pointed world
As long as anyone with hot blood can
And now she's looking for a novice man
