31/10/2008

This year’s FISA Youth Coaches Conference opened with the scene being set for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. The conference was held in Singapore which is the host city of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.

FISA President Denis Oswald opened proceedings along with Nicholas Ee of the Singapore Rowing Association. Speakers from the organising committee of the Youth Olympic Games described the holistic approach of the Games.

The Youth Olympic Games is taking a wider approach than just a sports focus with a culture and education programme running at the same time as the Games. The initiative is to educate, engage and influence athletes on how to be true Olympians. This is in line with the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, respect and playing an active part in their communities.

Apart from learning about the Games, there was much discussion regarding the qualification system for the Youth Olympic Games. The system is still to be decided.

Coaches from 19 nations attended the conference which featured newly appointed youth commission member Guin Batten as facilitator along with Barbara Fenner of the youth commission. Former Olympic medallist Batten entertained the 49-plus participants with stories and footage of her record-breaking crossing of the English Channel in a single.

Australia’s Peter Shakespear talked about setting up high performance programmes for youth and biomechanic specialist Valery Kleshnev, now based in Great Britain, talked about the latest in rowing biomechanics.

The coaches panel included Australia’s Jason Lane and David Thompson from New Zealand. Lane is the senior rowing coach at the Western Australian Institute of Sport and is currently working on a Master’s Degree in sports coaching. Thompson has coached national teams to medals at the Junior and Under 23 World Rowing Championships.

The youth coaching network was expanded and a Training Venues Network established for youth rowers and coaches to visit.

  • Plot summary

Based on a true story, the Boy in Blue stars a very young, athletic Nicholas Cage in the role of Canadian bootlegger, Ned Hanlan, who turned into a legendary world class rower.

Discovered by an amateur oarsman named Bill, Ned manages to get his paws on the first ever sliding seat sculling boat, and is propelled to fame when he wins a race on the Schuylkill in Philadelphia, beating his American opponent Plaistad. His win is a total upset, and brings Ned under the scrutiny of a wealthy man named Knox who plans to make lots of money from placing bets on Hanlan.

Knox, makes Bill an offer he can't refuse, then takes over Ned's future and gets him a professional trainer in order to prepare him for major races. In the meantime, Ned and Margaret, Knox's niece, begin a flirtation that ultimately turns into an excuse for Cage to get nekkid... er, to fall in love...

When Ned finally gets an opportunity to race against the Australian world champion, Trickett, an arrogant, cocky, gobby type (i.e. typical australian), they get into a bit of a barney; Hanlan rows into Trickett's scull and knocks him in - as a result of which he is banned from racing for life in the United States.

A chastened Ned, returns home and turns to Walter to train him so that he can enter and race in England at the world championships on the Thames and vindicate himself.

When the time for the race finally comes, his old friend is bribed to loosen a bolt under one of the pins on his boat (well you've got to have gate problems in rowing movies), so during the race Hanlan gets into trouble but his friend, feeling guilty, jumps in and swims over to hand him a spanner.

Hanlan amazingly (like you didn't see it coming) goes on to win.

    Rowing info

Ned Hanlon may have been a Canadian hero in his time, but truth is the man was, well, a bit of a asshole. The real story of his race against Trickett on the Tideway is more entertaining than anything the movie portrays, if slightly less believeable (one case where truth really is stranger than fiction). If you want to know what really went on, there's a great summary on www.rowinghistory.net/professionals.htm at the end (last section of dark red text).

What you must remember is that Hanlon was racing with slides against Trickett in a fixed seat boat and was using this unbeatable advantage to torture his opponent as much as he could - it's surprising Trickett didn't punch him really... note Hanlan was 5 8"-150 lb and Trickett was 6 5"-195 lb.

Anyway, back to the film version... Nicholas Cage does all his own sculling in the movie, and to be fair he's not actually that bad (well, compared to other actors technique). Cage, however, does have the "elite male sculler" act down to a treat and keeps removing his clothing in front of any watching women at the least provication.

As well as the traditional "gate incident" the film also features an "instrument of torture" rowing machine which is rather larger than your average concept2 (see images above).

Depite being set in philly and the UK, the rowing was filmed at several locations (St. Catherines, Bracebridge and Smiths Falls) in Ontario during 1984.

The shells that were used were Hudsons retro fitted with clogs and wooden-wheeled seats, six of them were used for the movie.

For those sweep fanatics amongst you, there is some footage of a coxed four near the start, but that's about it for crew boats.

    Που να τοποθετήσω τα υποπόδιά μου;

Αντιγράφω από το ιστολόγιο του Mike Davenport:

I received this question the other day from Casandra.

Hi Mike: I am 2 seat in a lightweight women’s eight…but we have to row in a men’s boats. This is a really basic question; How do we determine where our foot stretchers should be positioned?

Thanks for the question Casandra. Let’s try a detailed view first, then a quick possible solution.

For Really Novice Rowers (Really novice)
For those rowers just starting out, placement of the footstretcher can be a great teaching tool. Often coaches will put the stretchers at a point where the rowers can use the track’s sternmost stops as a teaching device, so that they don’t over- or under-compress. The feet are placed so that the rowers will almost hit the stops just at the catch. If they go too far, wham, and they stop. For good or for bad, it does help teach.

    For Rowers Looking For Comfort
In the past many rower’s calves really suffered greatly from the effect of either the seat track or boat deck digging into them at the end of each stroke. One method of relief was for the rower to move the footstretcher greatly stern-ward, to give the legs more room at the end of the stroke. More room, less digging into the calves. Newer shells with adjustable tracks usually don’t present this problem.

    Rowers Looking For Speed
More experienced rowers, which it sounds like that might be you, are looking for something different. They are looking for speed. They want to place the stretchers in the correct position to maximize the energy that is put into the oar.

And it is important where they are placed. The reason being is that placement is about the distance the hip of the rower is located, at the catch, in reference to the pin. And the faster the boat, then the further through the pin (greater the distance that the hips are stern-ward).

Rowers looking for speed will tend to place their footstretchers according to either

    1. shin angle to water’s surface
    2. work through
    3. catch length
    4. catch angle

Each of those methods become more involved in terms of the mechanics of determining the correct placement of the stretchers.

    Down and Dirty
So, with all that written, what should you do?

If you are sharing the boat with a men’s team, or any other group, then I would suggest that you place the footstretchers in a position where your shins are just shy of perpendicular to the water, at the catch. That might be about the best you can expect when sharing a boat, unless it is rigged specifically for you.

If you are not sharing the boat, it is just your team in it, then I suggest that the boat be rigged off of leverage numbers picked for your group. (You can find suggestions here.) From there use work through. Probably for lightweight women you may be looking at a range of 6 to 10 cms, as measured by the method on my numbers page.

Once you have set the feet, do some testing. Have a SpeedCoach? Great, test away. If not, then use a stop watch.

    Adjust, test, readjust until satisfied.

Six sports removed from 2009 University Games

    29/10/2008

The 2009 University Games, in Belgrade, Serbia, has cancelled six sports, including rowing, from the programme. In a press release, the International University Sports Federation, FISU, cited the current financial crisis as the reason.

FISU president, George Killian stated in a letter to FISA’s president Denis Oswald, “The current financial crisis that has affected the world’s leading financial institutions in the past week has now reached the level of university sport.”

The FISU press release explained that a recent meeting between the FISU Executive Committee and the Belgrade Organising Committee decided on a number of measures to help safeguard the 25th Summer Universiade, “due to the very difficult financial situation faced by the Belgrade Organising Committee.” The Belgrade Organising Committee proposed to reduce the number of sports on the current programme by six. The proposal was accepted by the FISU Executive Committee.

As well as rowing, canoeing, karate, shooting, wrestling and handball have been removed. These sports are considered optional sports and thus the local organising committee is able to decide if they will be included. Two optional sports remain; taekwondo and archery.

“I fully realise the disappointment this will cause to those student-athletes involved in the above sports,” Killian stated, “therefore, our members’ support of this tough FISU executive committee decision will be very much appreciated in order to help our Serbian friends in these troubled times to continue with the preparation for a slimmer Universiade.”

The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city. FISU's main responsibility is the supervision of both summer and winter Universiades as well as the World University Championships. Last month Belgrade hosted the World University Rowing Championships which attracted university students from 27 nations.

The 25th Universiade is scheduled to take place 1 – 12 July 2009.

Thrills and spills at Armada Cup

    28/10/2008

Women's podium with Emma Twigg (NZL), Ekaterina Karsten-Khodotovitch (BLR) and Pamela Weisshaupt (SUI).The BKW-Armada Cup in Bern, Switzerland, attracted what organiser Simon Stuerm described as the biggest and most probably the strongest field ever to assemble for the race last weekend, with 291 singles starting and 289 boats finishing. This, says Stuerm, is roughly 50 per cent more than last year.

The race for the 1500CHF ($US1300) first prize went to Estonia’s Allar Raja. Raja, who raced in the quad at the Beijing Olympics, caused an upset by beating out Olympic men’s single medallists Olaf Tufte of Norway and last year’s Armada Cup winner, New Zealand’s Mahe Drysdale. First woman home, Emma Twigg of New Zealand also upset the status quo by beating several time Armada Cup winner, Ekaterina Karsten of Belarus.

The race had its fair share of action and Stuerm admits, “The conditions were difficult this year. There was a lot of weed in the water.” Tufte led the race early on with Drysdale in second and Brodowski and Allar following. But then Tufte struggled with weed and later rowed into the reeds near to the shore.

Mahe Drysdale of New Zealand in the water.“Olaf said he has troubles turning his head to one side and he didn’t see the reeds coming,” says Stuerm who noted that experience of the 9km Wohlensee course definitely helped. “The first three (finishers) have all raced in Bern several times before.” This was Tufte’s first time racing in this event and he comes to the race following his recent marriage and honeymoon.

Both Drysdale and Cohen ended up in the water and with the water temperature at 9 degrees Celsius Stuerm admits it must have been pretty chilly. Two scullers were not so lucky. They did not finish the race, having to be picked up by safety boats after falling in.

Coming in second behind Allar, German Olympian (M2x) Karsten Brodowski took home 1000CHF for finishing second and Drysdale stayed just enough ahead of recent Head of the Charles winner Nathan Cohen (NZL) to earn the 500CHF third prize. Tufte finished fifth.

Winning the women’s event, Twigg was the 29th finisher overall. Twigg beat Karsten by 46 seconds. Switzerland’s lightweight national team sculler Pamela Weisshaupt followed in third earning the 500CHF third prize with New Zealand Olympic finalist (W2-) Juliette Haigh finishing fourth. Femke Dekker of the Netherlands finished fifth. Dekker won silver at the Beijing Olympics in the women’s eight.

The Armada Cup is known for its mass start which means scullers race hard to get into the lead. Stroke rates at the start are often around 35 strokes per minutes in a sprint to be in front by the first corner, 900m into the race. “Being in front at the first corner is crucial,” says Stuerm. “After that the rowers go to 28-30 (stroke rate) normally.”

Weather conditions were not conducive to record-breaking times with a slight head wind and cloudy conditions.

The BKW-Armada Cup began in 1987 and was designed off the cross country skiing race, the Engadiner, which attracts 10,000 participants.

    The 22th BKW-Armadacup ( 25th of October, 2008 )

A Single scull Long Distance Race over 9 Km with Mass Start in 2 categories (women only and mixed).

The past BKW-Armadacup races were a huge success. Young and old, debutantes and winners of Olympic Gold medals were very enthusiastic, not only, because it is an original rowing event but also a real alternative to the 2000m races. We hope this will also apply to the present event.
The next BKW-Armadacup on 25th of October, 2008 will be realised in the same way and on the same course as the years before. This year too there are a lot of world class rowers at the starting line. We hope to see many "hobby enthusiasts” at the present event.

Apart from the athletic performance, this should also be an enjoyable event. After the race you can enjoy a glass of wine and some good food in a nice atmosphere. Your friends and family are also welcome to join you.

Registration forms need to be returned by Monday, 13th of October, 2008, 18:00 at the latest.

Rowing prepares for first Youth Olympic Games

    24/10/2008

Rowing site for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.Sport has a new highlight. In 2010 the first ever Youth Olympic Games (YOG) will take place in Singapore, bringing together talented young athletes from around the world.

FISA’s events director, Svetla Otzetova, is just back from visiting the host nation and gave the venue the thumbs up. The rowing course will cater for 1000m racing, due to the shape of the channel, with room for eight lanes. Otzetova describes: “The water body has been created through the construction of a dam which is controlling the level of the water and neutralising the impact of the tide coming from the ocean. At the present time the water is still partly salty, but a purification treatment of the water is taking place.”

“It will be a spectacular place for presenting our sport,” adds Otzetova. “It is located next to the Formula One racing track.”

The Youth Olympic Games, an initiative of the International Olympic Committee, is a multi-sport, cultural and educational event with a strong emphasis on the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect, and the principles of universality, sustainability and no discrimination. All sports on the 2012 Olympic Games will be represented in the programme, although the actual disciplines may vary. The Youth Olympic Games will welcome athletes between the ages of 14-18, but each sport will focus on a specific two-year age group, with rowing involving the 17 to 18 year olds.

Singapore is expecting up to 3,200 youth athletes and 800 officials for the Games for a 12-day period in August 2010.

    silverskiff

The Silver Skiff is a time regatta for single scullers on the distance of 11 km. It takes place in Turin on the Po river among parks and royal castels, in the places that hosted the Winter Olympic games in 2006. In the Silver Skiff it is possible to find many champions challenging, among which some winners of Olympic or World golds, young promises of the international rowing and many masters of any age. All these participants give birth to a competition which combines the technical interest to the charm and the joy of a big party.
Since 1992 the Reale Società Canottieri Cerea, promoter of the competition, has tried to combine the technical and athletic aspects of this competition to the pleasure of staying in a city of art, the first capital of Italy, in order to create a rowing happening in which the biggest role is played by the sense of hospitality.
All FISA categories are present in the Silver Skiff: in 2007 there were 440 crews from 18 different nations and 5 continents, from 15 to 80 years old, and among them 10 Olympic medals winners and 105 winners of the world competitions.
On Saturday girls and boys from 11 to 14 years old contend for the Kinder Skiff, the time regatta of 4 km, in which 252 crews from 4 different nations have participated last year.
