Coaches involved in youth rowing gathered recently for the 15th Youth Coaches Conference in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Under the theme of ‘innovative training methods,’ more than 40 participants from 14 countries listened to topics including; technique and biomechanics, cross training and nutrition.

The two main speakers were Vladimir Issurin of Wingate Institute in Israel, who is known for his research in block periodisation and Valery Kleshnev who works in Great Britain and is well known for his research in the biomechanics of rowing technique.

The Israeli Rowing Federation’s chairman, Ram Golombik opened the conference and the first day included lectures from FISA Youth Commission member Axel Mueller. Mueller talked about various training methods important for all serious athletes. These methods included altitude training, strength training with ‘yo-yo devices’ using concentric and eccentric movement and technique training as an information process.

Professor Issurin then described the significance of the block periodised system as well as a range of training cycles of highly concentrated specialised workloads. He also touched on the taxonomy of block training cycles and the biological background of the block periodisation. He concluded by saying that effective training should include a tapering period that is short and sweet.

FISA member Valery Vladimirovich from Great Britain than reported on the Singapore Youth Olympic Games showing racing video clips, results and describing the experiences of the athletes.

The conference took participants on an outing to the Daniel Rowing Centre located on the shores of the Yarkon River in Tel Aviv. This is where Valery Kleschnev, arriving directly from the United States, gave his lecture on the biomechanics of rowing for young, serious athletes. Kleschnev talked about the need to analyse efficiency and effectiveness of technique. He described the energy transformation during a stroke and the diversity of effective rowing styles.
