FISA, the International Rowing Federation, selected the winners of the 2009 World Rowing Awards, the organization announced Wednesday. U.S. Women's Head Coach Tom Terhaar won the 2009 World Rowing Coach of the Year, while the U.S. women’s pair of Erin Cafaro and Susan Francia won the 2009 World Rowing Female Crew of the Year.

In addition, New Zealand single sculler Mahe Drysdale won 2009 World Rowing Male Crew of the Year, adaptive single sculler Tom Aggar of Great Britain won the inaugural 2009 World Rowing Adaptive Crew of the Year and Don Rowlands, a 1956 New Zealand Olympian, won the 2009 World Rowing Distinguished Service to International Rowing award. The awards will be presented at the 2010 World Rowing Gala on January 23, in conjunction with the annual World Rowing Coaches Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Since being hired as women’s head coach in 2001, Terhaar has established great success for the U.S. team at the international level. Most recently, he coached the women’s pair and eight to gold medals and the women’s quadruple sculls to a silver medal at the 2009 World Rowing Championships. At the 2008 Olympic Games, Terhaar’s women's eight won the gold medal, the first in the event at the Olympics since 1984. It came on the heels of back-to-back world titles in the event in 2006 and 2007. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Terhaar led the women’s eight to a world record in the heat and a silver medal in the final.

This past summer, Cafaro and Francia became to first women’s pair in U.S. history to win the gold medal at the 2009 World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland. The duo came from behind in the final 500 meters to defeat Romania by 0.36 seconds to claim the title. One day later, the 2008 Olympic gold medalists won a second gold as part of the women’s eight.
