Active Rate

ActiveRate & ActiveTime

These great new products from Active Tools calculate ratings without using external sensors, allow accurate self timing and display a Check Factor to measure the effectiveness of your rowing technique

ActiveRate Rate Meter - £85

No Wires
An internal nanotechnology based accelerometer senses the variation in boat speed during each stroke and allows ratings to be calculated. This means that there are no wires so you can easily use the unit in any boat. Failures caused by wiring and connector problems are also eliminated and you achieve an extremely tidy installation.

You can either fix the standard mounting bracket to your boat or use the hinged suction cup bracket to attach the unit to any boat in seconds.

Clock
When you want to, you can display the time to manage your training outings or to make sure that you get to the start of races on time.

Rate watch
You can take the ratings of passing crews by clicking the button in time with their catches.

ActiveTime Rate Meter - £130

All the great features of the ActiveRate plus:

Check Factor
Good body control and quick and effective catches are vital to good rowing technique so the ActiveTime unit displays a Check Factor which is calculated from the boat's speed changes during the stroke. This factor is derived from the maximum boat deceleration, rather than the average deceleration, as some variation in boat speed during the stroke is unavoidable and it has been shown that minimising the average change does not always result in the fastest race times.

Checks vary considerably depending on boat types and crew weights but they are a useful way of evaluating technical changes, comparing crews, and seeing how consistent a crew's technique is throughout a race..

Self Timing and Data Recall
Standing start pieces can be automatically timed as the unit senses when you start rowing and also when you wind down at the end of the piece. Times are automatically saved for the last ten timed pieces and can be recalled along with average ratings and average checks.

Many people find that timing themselves over set distances gives them more useful speed information than trying to work with fluctuating impeller or GPS derived speed readings. Races are won by the crew that takes the least time to cover a set distance, rather than the boat that goes fastest at any given point in the race!

ActiveTime with Heelswitch - £145

Self timing on rolling starts

The fibre optic linked sensor is attached between the heels of your shoes and by moving your heels apart you can easily start and stop the timer. Rowers generally find this straightforward to operate and it means that you can accurately time yourself in heads and rolling start training pieces.

In addition you can time to intermediate points in the race. The use of fibre optics makes the system completely waterproof and there are no electrical contacts to fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these units suitable for all boat types and any water conditions?
They are designed for use in 'racing' sliding seat rowing boats used in normal water conditions. They can work in other situations but are likely to give less stable readings.

Are there any special mounting requirements?
They are designed to work at any mounting angle between horizontal and vertical but do need to be mounted approximately square to the boat in order to give accurate Check Factors.

Can I use them when Coxing?
When coxing they will be mounted at 180 degrees to their normal orientation so this creates difficulties. Usually you will find that you get reliable ratings but Check readings will become a measure of acceleration, rather than deceleration, so will not be correct.
