This year’s Youth Coaches Conference goes to Singapore later this month with an accomplished line-up of speakers addressing youth rowing issues. Singapore is the location for the first Youth Olympic Games (in 2010) and the Youth Coaches Conference is taking this opportunity to highlight these Games.

FISA’s youth commission member Barbara Fenner says the emphasis of the conference is getting youth rowers prepared for the Youth Olympics.

“The focus is on ambassador preparation (for the Youth Olympics) as well as the usual practical coaching tips for everyday training,” says Fenner. “Our other highlight this year is to broaden the network of coaches, clubs and rowing centres where youth rowers of the world can network and provide exchanges for crews or individual rowers and/or coaches.”

The key guest speakers are Peter Shakespear and Valery Kleshnev. Shakespear was behind Australia’s original “talent search program” which went into Australian high schools identifying students that would make good rowers. An Olympic rower himself, Shakespear then went on to Great Britain as part of a similar talent identification programme, “World Class Start.”

Shakespear will talk on starting a high performance youth programme and aiming for consistency within these programmes.

Kleshnev rowed for the Soviet Union in the 1970s and 1980s. After finishing his studies Kleshnev took up a job at Australia’s Institute of Sport working in biomechanics. He then got head-hunted in 2005 by the English Institute of Sport where Kleshnev now works in biomechanics.

Kleshnev will address the latest in rowing biomechanics.

The conference starts on Thursday 16 October and goes through to Sunday 19 October. There will also be a coaches panel including coaches from Australia and New Zealand. New member of FISA's Youth Commission Guin Batten will also be speaking.
