Food: the flavour of February’s social media

05/03/2012 - 11:39:00
The best of World Rowing’s social media for February showed that food was a hot topic of conversation.
When asked what people liked to eat straight after a training session the answers were varied, if not slightly off-the-wall. Chad Andrews said: “No less than 6 scrambled eggs as an after workout snack with a glass of orange juice,” while Mitch Zysk Owski commented: “steaks, sushi and beer”. Hossam Samir was a bit more general: “To be honest, anything!!”
Then our junior social mediaites were asked what food helps them best recover after a workout. Matija Vukovski said, “Anything that my family produces in our garden.” Max Ponsen was much more scientific about it, “Fruit (vitamins), multigrain biscuits (carbohydrates) and curd cheese (protein).” Alexander Modest was very specific: “Maxim protein bar, chocolate milk, rye bread and bananas.”
It’s hard to talk about food without mentioning lightweight and the question posed to our lightweight community was: “What food do you eat when you know you’ve got a weigh-in coming up?” James Taylor answered rather frankly: “We eat food before a weigh-in??” Jamie Kirkwood offered a solution: “Rice cakes and chocolate the night before, as light and high in calories as possible.” Michael Linehan didn’t have a problem pointing out: “I’m well below the limit anyway, so it doesn’t matter what I eat!”
The homepage poll of the month asked the question: “What is your main fear in racing?” Coming out on top was: “Making a crucial mistake, like catching a crab.”
A photo of New Zealand’s Peter Taylor receiving his medal after going 6:44 in the lightweight men’s single sculls at the New Zealand National Rowing Championships really got social mediaites clicking away with an impressive number of “likes”. This finishing time was faster than the current World Best Time.
And for a bit of looking back, the video clip of the men’s pair at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games proved to be very popular. Watch it here.
In Great Britain significant discussion mounted when it was announced that the very traditional Oxford vs. Cambridge Boat Race, or The Boat Race, would now include the women’s boat race on the same day as the men’s. This article set the picture.
The Olympic Games crept closer passing the 150-days-to-go mark while the Paralympic Games went through the six-months-to-go mark. This came with the announcement of the Paralympic torch relay.
Indoor rowing featured prominently with the CRASH-B World Indoor Rowing Championships taking place. A photo album of the event was well viewed.
There was also a popular feature of Denmark’s Henrik Stephansen who set a new indoor rowing World Record for lightweight men. He gave an exclusive interview to World Rowing.
This begged the question to ask our social mediaites: “During an indoor rowing test, what do you prefer?” At the top of the list was: “Lots of loud shouting and motivational calls” with second being: “Loud motivating music.”
