Expert to assess Australian rowers

10th October 2005, 16:20

ROWING Australia will bring top Norwegian rowing expert Thor Nilsen to Australia this week, in its bid to get an edge over rivals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Nilsen, whose coaching record includes more than 30 world championship and eight Olympic gold medals, will conduct an in-depth review of RA's high performance rowing program.

"Basically what we are doing in bringing Thor out here is to assess our processes, our training programs, the depth of our talent, and assess that against what the rest of the world is doing," RA CEO Andrew Dee said.

Nilsen has been involved in rowing for nearly 50 years and has a reputation as the most qualified and experienced coach in the world.

The Norwegian is also Development Director at the International Federation of Rowing Association.

"To have him come over here and give us an independent assessment of where we stand in relation to the rest of the world is really quite unique ... he's really considered to be the prize catch," Dee said.

Nilsen arrives on Wednesday and will take a 10-day whistle-stop tour of the country to talk to key personnel in Australian rowing before returning in November to deliver his findings.

The final stage of the assessment will take place next April when Nilsen returns to see how well his recommendations have been implemented.

The final visit coincides with the Olympic rowing trials, which will allow Nilsen to look at the athletes themselves and complete his assessment.

Dee predicts Nilsen will be able to advise the RA on how to fine-tune its methods and have an even greater focus on winning gold medals.

"We want to pick the eyes out of the world's best systems out there and apply the appropriate ones to ourselves," he said.
