Alexandra Tsiavou from Greece focusing before the start of the Lightweight Women's Single Sculls semifinal at the 2010 Rowing World Cup in Beld, Slovenia.Greek Rowing is proud to announce that, for the second year running, Alexandra Tsiavou has been awarded Greece’s Best Female Athlete as voted by the country’s journalists. This is the first time that a rower has won it two years in a row.

Tsiavou, 25, became a World Champion last year when she finished first in the lightweight women’s double sculls. She then spent the first part of this season picking up Rowing World Cup medals in the lightweight single before moving back into the double to take gold at the 2010 European Championships. Tsiavou continued to show form at the 2010 World Rowing Championships. With partner, Christina Giazitsidou, they finished third in the lightweight double.

This award is decided by Greek sport journalists and is broadcast live on Greek national television. Every year all national sports federations in Greece are asked by the Greek Journalists Union to send a list of their top athletes with their achievements. The journalists then vote and the three top athletes are nominated. Only during the awards ceremony is the one winner, in each category, announced. Tsiavou won the award after getting just ahead in the votes of a judo player (624 votes against 611). The third place getter, from gymnastics, got 479 votes.

At the award ceremony Tsiavou told the assembled journalists, “Sometimes we think you completely forget us. We are doing an outstanding effort and we do deserve this distinction.”
Tsiavou was World Rowing’s Athlete of the Month for July, here.
