Part II

updated 22 May 2008

Our athletes of the month, Chrysi Biskitzi and Vasileios Polymeros of Greece have just been to the Munich Rowing World Cup and are now back training at the Olympic course in Schinias, Athens. Here they share with World Rowing their experiences at Munich and what they do just before and during a big race.

World Rowing: Did you taper in preparation for Munich?
Polymeros and Biskitzi: We didn't change anything in our training programme but we reduced the volume a little bit because one week before the first World Cup we had the Hellenic Championships and had to participate with our clubs.

WR: How do you prepare the morning of a race?
B:
our first priority is to reach the right body weight. That means some kilometres on the water and then if necessary some more on the ergometer, with also some stretching is following.
P: always before a race we do training on the boat to "wake up" and control any grams with our weight if we need it.

WR: Do you have something you take with you for good luck? Or any superstitions?
B: I do not have any superstitions. I just try to get only the positive energy from the people around me.
P: I used to wear a hand lace that Chrysi gave me before the Athens Olympics. I thought it was lucky and I never took it off my hand. Unfortunately I lost it last year in Poznan inside the rowing course during the European Championships. To get my luck back she bought me a new one exactly the same!

WR: What do you do straight after weighing in?
B: drinking, drinking, drinking
P: I eat and drink a little.

WR: What do you do to get your mind ready for a race?
B:
I don’t leave it until the last minute. I think about my race the day before when my mind is clearer and then on the day I only execute my plan.
P: I listen to my favourite music tracks. This elevates me psychologically.

WR: Do you watch each others races?
P&B:
Usually we race one after the other so we see very few metres of a race. In Munich Vasileios was able to follow Chrysi by bicycle next to the girls’ coach and he was encouraging them all through the race. In the past Chrysi has also done the same. We rarely get to see any other races because after our finals we have to prepare our boats for travelling back to Greece.

WR: How do you like to relax after a race?
P&B: We like going for a walk in the centre of the city that we have visited and there we enjoy good food and a lot of ice cream!

WR: What did you think of your racing in Munich?
B: A medal is always welcome and I cannot say that I am not satisfied with our performance. But it was only an indication and we have a lot of work to do before the Olympics.

P: We felt a little tired because the previous week we raced at the Hellenic Championships. Although our performance was pretty good, as Chrysi says there is a long run until Beijing.
