OUR NEW DESIGN We have examined these issues from first principles, and have produced a revolutionary design that moves the water past the rowers, simulating the movement of a boat through the water. This creates "the feel" of rowing in a boat on water. Water is powered, through hydraulically efficient channels, by submersible electric pumps. The speed of flow can be adjusted electronically to give any speed up to 3 metres per second. A rowing frame provides rowing stations that represent the layout and structure of a boat, allowing rowers to sit behind each other as they would in a boat. The rowing frame can be set to a chosen level above the water surface and rocks about it's longitudinal axis to enable "the crew" to feel the balance of the boat. Standard equipment that is used for fitting out boats is used in the powered rowing tank. The gearing has been adjusted so that conventional Concept oars and sculls can be used. Easily adapted, the powered rowing tank can be used for rowing and sculling. The gearing gives a realistic feel for training intensities and for teaching beginners about the feel of the stroke. A coxing position is included so that coxes can be taught the control of crews and commands before taking to the water where they can learn to steer a boat. |
