University rowing warms up

University rowers from around the world are on their way to Belgrade, Serbia. Starting on Friday 5 September, 143 crews representing 27 nations will compete at the 2008 World University Rowing Championships.Racing starts with heats and repechages on 5 September with semifinals raced the following day and finals on Sunday 7 September. The most popular event is the men’s and women’s single – 15 countries have entered the women’s single and 14 will race in the men’s single.
Poland is sending the most crews with 13 crews; one in every discipline. Germany has the next biggest contingent with 10 crews. At the other end of the scale, Israel and Norway are sending one athlete each.
Belgrade’s regatta course is on Sava Lake, home of the Ada Ciganlija Rowing Centre and is centrally situated just 5km from the centre of Belgrade. The course has previously hosted a number of international rowing events including the World Rowing Under 23 Regatta in 2003 and the World Rowing Junior Championships in 1978.
The Serbian Rowing Federation is keen to promote rowing as a sport that gives people a chance to achieve great results in both sport and education. Serbian rowers are known for being recruited to row at top American universities and Serbia welcomes the chance for rowers to discover their country.
These championships will act as a lead up to the 2009 World University Games which are also being held in Belgrade. Rowing is one of the optional sports at the University Games and Belgrade has selected to include it in next year’s sporting programme.
The countries competing this year will be; Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Great Britain, Germany, Estonia, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Israel, Macedonia, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Taiwan and Ukraine.
