Turkish weightlifting World and Olympic Champion Naim Süleymanoğlu has been in hospital since April 30 2009, Turkish and Bulgarian media reported.
Süleymanoğlu, who fled his native Bulgaria in 1986 and has since gone on to win World and Olympic gold for Turkey, was reportedly was taken to Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Hospital's intensive care unit on April 30 after having a seizure and high fever, Turkish daily Hurriyet said.
On May 1, the hospital’s deputy chief of medicine, İbrahim Morgül, said Süleymanoğlu was in stable condition, but that more tests were needed.
"We have taken care of his seizures and he is stabilized. But we will only understand more about his situation after more tests," Hurriyet quoted Morgül as saying.
Turkish Weightlifting Federation chair Hasan Akkuş was said to have visited Süleymanoğlu and said his condition was "not at all bad."
Bulgarian media, however, said on May 3 that Süleymanoğlu was in a state of coma.
Bulgarian daily Dnevnik quoted Turkish daily Zaman as suggesting that the seizure might be alcohol-related. Allegedly, "bad friends" had driven Süleymanoğlu to alcohol abuse.
Born Naim Suleimanov in Ptichar, Bulgaria, he fled the country in 1986 and resurfaced in Turkey. Bulgaria would not let him compete for Turkey until Turkey paid $1 mln. Süleymanoğlu then went on to win three Olympic gold medals; in Seoul in 1988, Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996.
And here is the rest of it.
