PRINCETON, N.J. - USRowing has invited 52 rowers and six coxswains to attend its 2009 Junior Women's National Team Selection Camp this summer, the organization announced on Thursday.
The camp, which will be held June 22-July 5 at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., will select the junior women's eight and junior women's four that will represent the U.S. at the 2009 FISA World Rowing Junior Championships August 5-8 in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France.
The camp will also select a High Performance Team of 14 rowers and a coxswain that will travel to Berlin, Germany, to train with the German Junior National Team. This will provide athletes with eligibility remaining for the junior national team the opportunity to gain international racing experience. In addition, eight rowers and a coxswain will be chosen to represent the U.S. at the CanAmMex Regatta July 11-19 in Mexico City, Mexico.
Five rowers and one coxswain return from last year's junior national team including Lucy Grinalds, Molly Hamrick, Brandy Herald, Chelsea Lucas, Elizabeth Nilan and Michelle Pearson. Hamrick, Herald and Lucas were members of the junior women's eight that won gold at the 2008 FISA World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships in Linz, Austria, while Grinalds, Nilan and Pearson finished sixth in the junior women's four.
