It is always a challenge for Olympic hosts to make use of their Olympic venues and Beijing is planning to bring the tourists to Shunyi. The tourist website, travelchinaguide.com describes a variety of Olympic-themed cultural activities that are planned for the venue.

A floating podium will be set up and 100 hand moulds of Olympic champions have been put on display. The website also says recreational activities are available including “extreme drifting, flat-water experience and diving.”

The park is about an hour outside of Beijing and takes in 162 hectares of former farmland. It took two years to complete the venue with 400 000 square metres of lawn installed and 5 000 trees transferred and replanted in the area. The rowing and canoe course had 1.7 million cubic metres of water piped in to fill the course.

Meanwhile China is already looking ahead to winning medals at the 2012 Olympic Games. The honorary president of the Chinese Olympic Committee, He Zhenliang said that the national rowing team was aiming to training athletes like five-time Olympic Champion, Steven Redgrave.

At the Beijing Olympics China won their first ever Olympic gold medal in rowing and Zhenliang hopes that rowing will get even stronger in his country.

Beijing: Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park to open to visitors on May 1st

Published : 1:04 A.M. EST, Jan 4, 2009

News from Beijing is that the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park will be open to the public on May 1st, 2009.

During the Beijing Olympic Games, the park hosted the Rowing, Canoe/Kaytak, Flat-water Kayak, Slalom and marathon swimming events. Situated in the Shunyi District, the park covers a total area of 162 hectares, which is the largest surface area of the newly-built Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Venues. Covered with green trees and limpid water, cloaked with azure sky, the park is also a great view.

After the Olympic Games, the park was closed for maintenance. Some facilities used in the events have been demolished; the roads in the park were maintained and resurfaced. All the maintenance work is to ensure better service for tourists after the park reopens.

From May 1st, tourists will be able to purchase tickets to visit the park. Various Olympics-themed cultural activities will be held in the park. Tourists can visit the Floating Podium and Fountain Square. A special scene in the park is the hand molds of 100 Olympic Champions sampled during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The park will also hold a series of recreation programs. Visitors can participate in the extreme drifting, flat-water experience and diving.
