Cambridge University will row the Xchanging Boat Race next month in a Canadian Hudson shell, rather than their customary Empacher, it has emerged this week.

New chief coach Steve Trapmore explained that the choice followed extensive testing both in the UK and on their January training camp in Spain, and that the decision had been taken jointly by the coaches and the top crew.
“It’s the right boat for the guys we’ve got at the moment”, he said. “But it’s the athletes who are going to make the difference. They have to train right and row right. There are no short-cuts to performance.”
Both Oxford and Cambridge have used Empachers, the yellow German boats which have dominated the international market, for several decades.
At Olympic level Empacher, whose products are still very popular, face increasing competition from other manufacturers, particularly in eights. Hudson’s eights, from their SHARK range, are named Hammerheads.
Cambridge have had the use of a demonstration Hudson all winter, raced it in the Trial Eights in December, and placed an order for a new boat of their own some weeks ago.
