05/11/2008

The seventh edition of the Arab Rowing Championships finished with four nations sharing the medals table. Raced over two days on Tunisia’s Lake Tunis, the host country picked up 10 medals including two golds while Egypt finished with five golds and a total of eight medals. Algeria followed also with eight medals, four of them gold. Iraq finished with a very successful seven medals – one silver and six bronze.

Iraq’s 2008 Olympians Haidar Nozad and Hamza Hussian raced in the men’s double but, despite their experience, Ahmed Khamis and Hany Adbel Meneam of Egypt finished in front. Hussian also competed in the lightweight men’s single (placing third), the men’s quad (placing third), the lightweight men’s double (placing third) and the lightweight men’s quad (placing fourth).

The strength of Algeria’s Riad Garidi Mohamed and Kamel Ait Daoud helped earn their nation two gold medals with the pair winning in the lightweight men’s double and helping to win the lightweight men’s quad.

The women’s events were dominated by Heba Hassan of Egypt. Hassan won the women’s single, the women’s double (with Eman Hassan) and the lightweight women’s single.

Race organiser Faycal Soula said weather was windy but warm over the two days of racing. It shifted from a tail wind in the first day to a cross-tail on day two.

Although experiencing a slight post-Olympic participation slump, the championships still attracted seven Arab rowing federations including Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Iraq and Kuwait.

The 8th Arab Rowing Championships will be held in Alexandria, Egypt from 29 – 31 October 2009.
