The Olympics attract well known people from around the world. At the Olympic rowing venue in Shunyi, Beijing, the final day of rowing was a very busy day in the Olympic family grandstand just near the finish line.

HRH Prince Frederik of Denmark has been following the progress of the Danish lightweight men’s four. Their impressive gold medal win was witnessed by Prince Frederik. Also watching from Denmark was Bryan Mikkelsen, Denmark;s Minister of Sport.

Queen Anne-Marie of Greece witnessed Vasileios Polymeros win the second ever Olympic medal in rowing for Greece. Polymeros raced with Dimitrios Mougios and picked up silver in the lightweight men’s double. Polymeros won bronze in this event in 2004.

Olympic medallist, Roland Baar of Germany watched the German women win bronze in the quadruple sculls. Baar was awarded the Thomas Keller Medal for an outstanding career in rowing in 1998 and is actively involved in the German Rowing Federation. Dr. Franz Josef Jung, the German Federal Minister of Defence also watch Germany race.

President Tarja Halonen of Finland and her husband Pentti Arajarvi got to witness a proud moment for Sanna Sten and Minna Nieminen of Finland as they won silver in the lightweight women’s double.

The surprise silver medal by the Dutch women’s eight was watched by Erica Tersptra, the president of the Dutch Olympic Committee. Tersptra is a two-time Olympian (bronze and silver medal in swimming from 1960 and 1964).

The president of the International Olympic Committee, IOC, Jacques Rogge came with his wife and were very interested in the races. Rogge was joined by members of the IOC including Thomas Bach, Rene Fasel, Kai Holm and Sir Craig Reddie. Also Urs Lacotte, the director general of the IOC.

Also enjoying the rowing finals was Premier Ferenc Gyurcsany of Hungary, Wilfried Lemke, the special adviser on sport for development and peace at the United Nations and Andrew Ryan, director of ASOIF (Association of Summer Olympic International Federations).
