2010 award winners shortlisted

Here it is. The shortlist for the 2010 World Rowing Awards:

2010 World Rowing Coach of the Year- Dick Tonks (New Zealand) As head coach for New Zealand, Tonks has gone from strength to strength. This year he helped lead the New Zealand squad to their most successful World Rowing Championships ever where they picked up a total of 10 medals. Tonks was behind the three gold medals; men’s double sculls, women’s double sculls and men’s pair.

- Hartmut Buschbacher (Germany) Following an 18 year stint away from German rowing, a period when Buschbacher coached in the United States and China, he returned to be head coach for Germany. Since then Germany has produced four World Champions in 2009 and five in 2010.

- Johan Flodin (Sweden) When Frida Svensson won the women’s single scull at the 2010 World Rowing Championships her coach of 13 years, Johan Flodin was acknowledged. Flodin is a former athlete on the Swedish National Team competing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. He then became the national trainer of the Swedish rowing team.

- Nicola Bralic (Croatia) The coach behind Croatia’s men’s quadruple scull is Nicola Bralic. The quad is currently senior and under-23 World Champions and show no signs of slowing down. Bralic formerly rowed at the national level and his coaching success can be traced back to 1994.

- Gianni Postiglione (Italy) An internationally renowned coach, Postiglione is currently the head coach of Greece. He has improved the level of Greek rowing and at this year’s World Rowing Championships Greece won a silver and two bronze medals.

2010 World Rowing Male Crew of the Year
- Ondrej Synek (Men’s single scull, Czech Republic) Synek has just completed an unbeaten season culminating in becoming the World Champion in the men’s single.

- Eric Murray, Hamish Bond (men’s pair, New Zealand) Murray and Bond have not lost a major race ever since they teamed up in the pair in 2009. This year their winning streak continued when they fought off the strong British duo in the final of the 2010 World Rowing Championships. Murray and Bond became World Champions for the second consecutive year.

- Gregor Hauffe, Maximilian Reinelt, Kristof Wilke, Florian Menningen, Richard Schmidt, Lukas Mueller, Toni Seifert, Sebastian Schmidt, Martin Sauer (Men’s eight, Germany) Since their heartbreaking illnesses at the Beijing Olympics, the German men’s eight has achieved two consecutive World Champion titles in 2009 and 2010.
2010 World Rowing Female Crew of the Year
- Frida Svensson (Women’s single scull, Sweden) Svensson has been appearing on the senior international scene since 2003 and she first made the podium in 2005 at the Lucerne Rowing World Cup. Svensson’s dogged determination finally brought her the World Champion title in 2010 when she defeated arch rival, Ekaterina Karsten (BLR) in the single.

- Anna Goodale, Amanda Polk, Jamie Redman, Taylor Ritzel, Esther Lofgren, Eleanor Logan, Meghan Musnicki, Katherine Glessner, Mary Whipple (Women’s eight, United States) Three-time World Champions and World Best Time holders since 2006, the United States women’s eight goes from strength to strength.

- Anna Watkins, Katherine Grainger (Women’s double sculls, Great Britain) This new combination hit it off immediately after forming early in 2010. They dominated the 2010 season winning every major race that they entered, culminating in the World Championship title at the end of the season. Watkins and Grainger also doubled up for the Rowing World Cup season in the quadruple sculls where they also medalled.

- Juliette Haigh, Rebecca Scown (Women’s pair, New Zealand) Haigh and Scown teamed up at the start of this season and were instantly successful. At the World Rowing Championships they completely dominated the final, outpacing the entire field.

2010 World Rowing Adaptive Crew of the Year
- Tom Aggar (ASM1x, Great Britain) Aggar is in a class of his own and he continues to get better. This year he broke his own World Best Time and added another World Champion title to his collection which includes Paralympic gold.

- Anthony Theriault, Meghan Montgomery, Victoria Nolan, David Blair, Laura Comeau (LTAMix4+, Canada) The current World Champions, the core of this crew participated in the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, taking a sixth place. They were fourth in Poznan in 2009.

- Dmytro Ivanov, Iryna Kyrychenko (TAMix2x, Ukraine) As 2010 World Champions, this is the second World title for this combination, as they took gold in Poznan in 2009. Ivanov and Kyrychenko have been rowing together since 2007. Kyrychenko rowed at the Beijing Paralympic Games with a different partner, and finished eighth.
2010 Rowing Distinguished Service to International Rowing
- Hart Perry (United States) Hart Perry is a retired FISA international umpire (1971-1999), long time member of FISA’s youth commission and long serving coach of youth rowing at the legendary Kent School. Over 50 years in the sport, he was director of the US National Rowing Foundation and Power Ten group and is a long time steward of Henley Royal Regatta.

- Maurice Paschoud (Switzerland) Paschoud is a long time rowing journalist. He is one of the founders of the Nations Cup. Paschoud is the founder of the RowingOne database which has been published and used by FISA since 2001. He has been working closely with FISA to keep the database alive and up to date, following each event scrupulously, and checking the consistencies of the entire database.

- Peter Morrison (Great Britain) Morrison is a long time leader of Scottish Rowing and an international umpire. Morrison Chaired FISA’s Masters Commission from 1995 to 2010.

The Awards will be presented at the 2011 World Rowing Coaches Conference on 22 January 2011.
