The Romanian Rowing Federation has elected Elisabeta Lipa as president. Lipa retired after Athens from an exceptional rowing career that spanned six Olympic Games and tallied up five gold, two silver and one Olympic bronze medals along the way, making her the most medalled Olympic rower in history.
Lipa’s success has made her a national icon in Romania and amongst the many awards that she has received there is the Star of Romania, the Eurosport Sport Star Award, the 2008 Thomas Keller medal and, by Romanian presidential decree, the title of Police General.
After winning gold at the Athens Olympics, Lipa did not rule out a seventh Olympic Games but she used her political standing to leverage the government. Lipa said to the Romanian Government that she would row at Beijing if the government would construct an international standard race course in Romania. The construction did not happen so Lipa officially retired from competitive rowing although she still hopes the course will be finished in the future.
Lipa remains involved in rowing on a number of levels including her role as a mentor and she is a member of FISA’s Athletes’ Commission.
Other famous names in Romanian rowing make up the new executive committee:
Veronica Cochela - vice president
Adrian Poeana - vice president
Cristian Malis - member
Viorica Susanu - member
Lulica Ruican - member
Octavian Rusu - member
Daniel Moise - member
